Back to posting some interesting news...

Immigrant advocacy in New York is hot as always--a campaign to enable immigrants to vote is underway.
While US headlines read along the lines of "US will Retake Southern Cities from Militants" elsewhere in the world people are reading "US kills 40 worshippers in rocket attack on Fallujah mosque" or 110 Iraqis Killed in Fallujah This only fuels my recent hysteria over the abysmal print news. I cannot find a decent paper to read in the Bay Area. I sincerely, truly, for real tried to get past my NY Times snobbery and read both the SF Chron and the Oakland Tribune. But I must sadly conclude that the sports sections offer the most detailed and thoughtful news analysis. It's outrage. I'm now thinking of venturing to the other CA papers--Sac Bee and LA Times? It makes me kind of sad because newspapers make me feel connected to a city, but I don't want to buy a paper where there's nothing to read...

One last serious news item: Arnie's attack on the Institute for Labor and Employment based out of UCLA and UC Berkeley. The Governator has targetted this lone department for complete termination--excuse the unfunny pun. He's pulling $2 million from this fiscal year's budget and looking to eliminate funding altogether next year. The ILE is a rare institute that brings worker advocates/organizers, academics and policy types together to critically analyze workplace issues. Proponents of the cut claim that ILE is a front for that trains union members in physical intimidation tactics and such and even if they weren't literally thugs, tax dollars shouldn't go towards such pro-worker idealogues. They don't seem to have much to say regarding the pro-management institutions--namely the business schools. Anyway, here's a pretty good article.

For some lighter news:
This has been making the email rounds...Right Wing Eye It's good to know that the left can bust out with a funny every once in a while.
Atlanta beats the Mets 18-10? What kind of baseball score is that?!
