New career paths
I spent the day discussing racial justice and movement building at a funder sponsored "convening" of "thought people" of various organizations. Grrr...I like to keep Lunamania substantively work-free. But given that so many of my peoples are at times burnt out, in need of creative outlets and love butcher paper, I feel it is my duty to always share new career possibilities such as -- "graphic recording."
Before all that there are really important matters to report. Tonight, the Mets played the A's at MacAfee Stadium for the first time in THIRTY TWO YEARS. I was there rockin' my Mets cap in a sea of A's nuts. The Mets lost, but I have to say it was a great game. Scutaro hit a 9th inning walk-off homer. Hey, I got to see an error free game from Matsui--he stole a base too. Excellent.
For those who care to know about the exciting world of "graphic recording"...
You all know that progressive workshop-y types have single-handedly sustained the butcher paper industry. Today, they took it to the next level. For reasons unknown, my packet contained an "annotated agenda" and I noticed there were instructions for "graphic recorders" to do their thing."What's taters?" asks the Smoegel/Golem in my head. I then notice two white women in matching pink sweaters haul out one of those tool box sized art kits. These were no mismatched sets of Mr. Bubbles smelly markers (I was always fond of the red and brown ones.) No, these are professional artist who use butcher paper as their medium. So they proceed to arm themselves with a fistful of angle-tip calligraphy markers and pastel charcoal chalk things. Then they start shading their letters, and drawing little caricatures of speakers next to the blurbs of their comments. It was so bizarre, but well-executed. I was unexplicably horrified. I mean people have now made entire careers out of writing on butcher paper. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Oh, Manohla Dargis says Batman rocks. I'm there right after I see Brangelina--drool. I have no shame.
