Fascinating

One of the exciting benefits of my job is the opportunity to spend some quality time with Summary File 3 of the US Census data set. Between you me and the rest of cyberspace, I'd rather be reading Engadget or E-online even, but instead I've developed a truly meaningful relationship with SF 3 as I like to refer to my dear friend. I think it is no coincidence that 3 is my favorite number.

For those of you who haven't had the privilege of getting to know SF 3 the way I have, she's quite a party pleaser. Not only can she expound on language data and household income broken down by census tracts, she leads me to incredibly useful other Census tidbits like this. This font of useful knowledge informed me that Americans consume an average of 13.7 lbs of turkey a year. That's roughly the size of my dog Jack. And, I now know that there are 3 places and townships (whatever that is) named Turkey and 8 places named Cranberry. Just fascinating, no?

I suppose it's nice to have a government with a sense of humor, but someone is actually devoting time to calculating this stuff? I just hope it's some unpaid demography student...
